Ball, Lightning Rod

Accession number: 2001.09
Category: Roof element
Date: before 2001
Materials: Glass
Measurements: 10 cm W x 13 cm H
Narrative: This ball was removed from one of the 6 rods over the Harris House. When Terry Eyland came in 1995, the three remaining balls were intact. On Aug. 20 he noticed that one was broken so he left it and the third one and removed this ball. A broken ball and an intact ball are still over the Harris House.
Description: A blue glass (not transparent) ten sided lightning rod ball with 2.5cm holes for mounting on 1/2 inch copper rod. There is some discolouration around the bottom hole caused by the oxidization/corrosion of the rod in contact with the glass.
History of Use: This ball was removed from one of the six rods over the Harris House. When the museum curator, Terry Eyland, began working at the Museum in 1995 the three remaining balls were intact. On Aug 28, 2001 Terry noticed that one of the balls was broken, so he left two of the remaining three balls (the broken one and another) and removed one to preserve.
