Accession number: 1981.18.01
Date: July 1982
Materials: witherod (Viburnum cassinoides)
Measurements: 41 cm W x 32.5 cm H x 38.3 cm Diameter
Narrative: Made by Gerald Kent as part of Farm Days at the museum, July 1981. Originally entered into the database as 1982.12.01 at an unknown time; however, that resulted from a conflation with another Gerald Kent basket made for Farm Days the next year (1982.11.01), which is in bedroom 1. Display photo DIS-148 shows Mr. Kent manufacturing one of these baskets.
The open weave of this basket allowed the clam fishermen to swish the basket in saltwater thus cleaning the sand from clams.
Description: Round-bottomed (3+3 sticks), straight sides of heavy side stakes inserted into the bottom weave and twine-woven with finer shoots of witherod. Handle made by interweaving 3 side-stakes from opposite sides of the basket. Rim made by bending side-stakes down alongside adjacent side-stake.
