Narrative: THE PIANOFORTE WAS ORIGINALLY THE PROPERTY OF MRS. COLIN ALLAN, WIFE OF DR. COLIN ALLAN OF ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND.  DR. ALLAN WAS ATTACHED TO HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES AS STAFF SURGEON, HALIFAX IN THE EARLY 1800S.  THEIR DAUGHTER MARGARET, LIKE HER MOTHER, WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED MUSICIAN.  MARGARET ALLAN MARRIED JOSEPH PERNETTE MILLER ABOUT 1850 OF BRIDGEWATER, N.S. WEHRE SHE SPENT HER ENTIRE MARRIED LIFE.  THE PIANOFORTE ACCOMPANIED MARGARET TO BRIDGEWATER WHERE IT REMAINED IN THE MILLER FAMILY.  MARGARET ETHEL MILLER MCKEE WAS BORN IN BRIDGEWATER, 28 FEBRUARY 1915, THE DAUGHTER OF THE LATE J. ARTHUR MILLER AND S. MABEL (NEWCOMBE) MILLER OF BRIDGEWATER AND HER BROTHER MCGRIGOR ALLAN "MAC" MILLER (1910-2003).
Description: UPRIGHT MAHOGANY PIANOFORTE WITH FOUR TURNED FRONT LEGS ON CASTERS, TWO TURNED BACK LEGS ON CASTERS AND ONE PEDAL PROJECTING FROM A TURNED VERTICAL MEMBER RESEMBLING A LEG. KEYBOARD HAS 43 IVORIES, 30 BLACK KEYS, FRONT OF IVORIES ARE MOLDED WITH SEVERAL CURVES AND PAINTED GOLD. PIANOFORTE DECORATED ON TOP WITH TWO ROWS OF EBONY BANDING. FRONT IN THREE SECTIONS, MID SECTION LIFTING TO REVEAL KEYBOARD. BACK OF KEYBOARD DECORATED WITH TWO LATICE WORK CUT OUT RECTANGLES BACKED WITH RED CLOTH, BETWEEN THESE RECTANGLES IS INLAID LIGHT WOOD PLAQUE: "PATENT / GOULDING & D'ALMAINE / 20 SOHO SQUARE / LONDON", SERIAL NUMBER 4395.
