Narrative: Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited built the Oakhill Saw Mill in 1968-69 in Oakhill, Lunenburg County, N.S. on the outskirts of Bridgewater The mill was completely rebuilt in 2000-01. All of the equipment was removed from the first mill when it was rebuilt. At the time of the rebuild, there were 4 sawmills around the County, i.e. Tantallon, New Germany and two others, maybe in East River. They took all of the equipment from the 4 former mills to rebuild Oakhill sawmill in 2000. They sold some of the original 1969 equipment and some went to the Greenfield Mill. Kept very little as it was old and outdated for their operation. The sawmill produced wood products, i.e. spruce, pine and balsam fire into wood for house construction. In the 1960s most of the wood went to Europe and England and not the United States. They don't saw pine wood any longer. In 2000 the saw mill sent 85% to the United States and 15% to Canada, and none was shipped overseas. The mill gets 20% of their wood from Bowater Company lands and 80% from private lands which are much more costly. In 1999, they produced 37 million board feet. They ship the lumber by truck or railway car out of Halifax, N.S. Due to the slowdown in the market, in 2012 they are down to only one shift a day. At one time they employed more than 100 people and was capable of producing more than 150 million board feet of lumber. Current owner Resolute Forest Products shutdown operations in December 2012 and equipment will be removed in 2013. The 36 hectare property is intended for sale.
